Queen of Angels School Newsletter, February 8, 2008 Dear Parents, It is hard to believe that it is the beginning of February already and we just marked the beginning of our journey through Lent with Ash Wednesday. These forty days of Lent help us prepare for the great feast of the resurrection on Easter Sunday. Jesus went into the desert for forty days to prepare for his mission. Many centuries before that, the Hebrew people journeyed through the desert land for forty years before reaching the Promised Land. When people are in the desert, they think about what is most important., so it is easier to pray and think about God. So, just as Jesus spend six weeks alone in the desert, praying and fasting, we too have a desert time -- Lent. During these days we reflect our faults and try to become more like Jesus. How? First by praying, whether by ourselves or with others, perhaps by giving away something that is ours... by trying to put others first, instead of "me" first. It's like clearing a space in our hearts and lives so that the Holy Spirit can act in us. Many times throughout Lent we are reminded in the scriptures that Jesus is the Light.... we remember that Jesus died for us and came back to life again. Jesus is the light of Easter. Light and darkness are powerful symbols that are often employed in literature, art, and other forms of media. One gospel reading during Lent focuses on Jesus as the light of the world. Jesus gives sight to the man born blind and exposes the blindness of those who claim to see. He asks us to live as spiritually sighted people, children of light, so that God's love and truth can enter our lives more and more each day. The key to genuine repentance during the Lenten season lies not in the specific acts we do but in the change of heart that motivates the actions. This change of heart very often is awakened through the words or experience of a "fellow traveler" who shares their faith, who bears witness to God's love in their journey of life. This is how we each pass on the "Light of Christ." Have a blessed Lent! Marsha Jordan Many thanks to all who contributed to the surprise party held last Wednesday for me in the gym.
