Catholic Schools Week, January 27-February 1, 2008

This year's theme, "Catholic Schools Light the Way," combines the concepts of God's light in the world and the light of knowledge we strive to kindle in our students. The stained glass logo underscores the faith filled education we emphasize. The theme represents the special role of Catholic schools and teachers in lighting the way through a faith-based education that supports the whole child in learning about and leading a fulfilled life. Our students, in turn, will "light the way" to a brighter future through leadership in their communities, church, businesses and families.

Below are the activities planned with the school for the week:

Spelling Bee Champ 2008! Congratulations to Kerry Coughlin, grade 8, who won the spelling bee on Wednesday, January 16, as the entire school looked on. Kerry correctly spelled the word "chronology" to win the title over Hannah Till, also an eighth grader. Hannah becomes the 1st Runner-Up. Kerry will compete on Saturday, February 9, at the County Spelling Bee held at South Side High School. The winner there advances to the Area Spelling Bee at the Anthis Career Center on March 15.

ZBots- ITT Lego League Team takes State Championship! Attached to this newsletter is the newsletter from ITT detailing the facts regarding this Lego League Team and the Championship. But we congratulate our own students, David and Esther Bell, and former student, Alex Mitrevski, who were members of this team. For the team project, the ZBOTS focused on exploring how energy production and consumption choices affect the planet and our quality of life. The ZBOTS completed an energy audit of Queen of Angels School and Church. For their efforts, the team will represent Indiana at the national competition in the Spring in Minneapolis, MN. We are very proud of these students and wish them luck at nationals.

If anyone has an interest, we could pursue having a school Lego League team. We would need parental support and coaching. If you have any ideas, contact the school administration. Thanks!

Spring Variety Show- ??- Have you enjoyed watching your children perform and have the opportunity to perform in a variety/talent show in past years? Would you like to see this opportunity continue? We find that we are in a position this year that in order to make this a reality, we will need the volunteer efforts of a good solid group of parents. We are asking all parents to please consider in what ways you might be able to help with this effort. Maybe you can help with setting up the stage or lights or sound equipment. Maybe you can help with costuming (simple ones) for some of the students. Maybe choreography, or make up or organizational skills. Next week we will send home a more detailed list of opportunities for you. Anyone who, in the past, has had a child participate in the show knows what a great experience it is for the kids. We do have some very talented children! We hope that we are able to accomplish this special event once again this year with your help! The show is scheduled for May 16, 2008.

Please note on your calendars: School WILL BE in session of February 18 as a snow makeup day.
