Queen of Angels School March 1, 2008 Newsletter Dear Parents, This Sunday marks the 4th Sunday of Lent and we are moving closer to the celebration of Easter - the Resurrection of the Lord. This Sunday's theme is one that should be part of our everyday existence, that is, to help others see Jesus' love. When a little girl in third grade got glasses for the first time, she began to play more with her friends, ride her bike more often, and read more. Even her grades improved. When her parents asked, "Why didn't you tell us you couldn't see?" the girl honestly answered, "I didn't know I couldn't see." She never had healthy eyesight so she didn't know it was possible to have better vision than she experienced. In this Sunday's Gospel, Jesus gives sight to a man who had been blind all of his life. Certainly this man would not say, "I didn't know I couldn't see." He knew he waked in darkness among those who were sighted. What he didn't know- and then did know- was the healing touch of Jesus. What he didn't know- and then did know- was the power of love. The healing touch of Jesus and the power of love change this man's life. When his friends do not recognize him, when the authorities question and ridicule him, and when his parents leave him to "speak for himself," he simply and boldly proclaims that "the man called Jesus" had healed him. Because this man knows an experience of healing love, he can answer "I do believe, Lord" when Jesus asks him, "Do you believe in the Son of Man?" Like the little girl who didn't know she couldn't see, many people don't know the healing touch of Jesus and the power of love. As Catholic Christians, we can offer people this goodness. In the Second Reading for this Sunday (Ephesians 6:8-14), St. Paul tells us to live as "children of Light, for light produces every kind of goodness." In reaching out to others with gentle kindness and charity, we are "children of light" who help others see the love of Jesus. St. Theresa of Avila said: "Christ has no body on earth but yours, no hands, no feet on earth but yours. Yours are the eyes through which the compassion of Christ looks out upon the world." As a parent, you can use this quote to nurture a child's own sense of civic understanding. Saints were always ready to pray for anybody and everybody. We, too, can pray for everybody. Discuss this quote with your child and together come up with three ways your child thinks she or he can be the hands, eyes, and feet of Christ. Maybe someone needs a hug, or help with an errand or homework. The season of Lent offers the perfect time to talk more intentionally with your kids about what you value as a family and how, together, you can be Christ for one another.
