2006-2007 Year in Review

 

 

 

August:

School began on August 21, 2006 with 290 students in attendance.

Queen of Angels School was notified by the Department of Education that it received an “Exemplary School Rating” based on the prior year ISTEP Tests.

September:

Grandparents and Special Friends Day was held on Friday, September 8.

ISTEP Testing took place from September 18-29. 91% of students in grades 3-8 received a pass score on English/Language Arts, while 94% received a pass score in Math.

October:

The HASA Fundraiser kicked off on October 3 and resulted in an $11,000 profit. Funds are used to support school projects, Reconciliation reception, Grandparents Day, Graduation receptions, and teacher wish list items.

November:

Queen of Angels Alumna, and Bishop Dwenger Senior, Melanie Wagner is named a Commended Student by the National Merit Program. Melanie scored in the top 3% of all students nationwide on the PSAT test.

5th Grade Girls Volleyball team won the 5th grade Volleyball Tournament. The girls, who were coached by Queen of  Angels alumna, Katie Ryan, finished the season at 13-1.

Fortmeyers McDonald’s McTeacher's Night raised $342 for the communication system.

Student Council sponsored a Thanksgiving Food Drive which collected a ton of food for the St. Vincent DePaul Food Pantry.

December:

Student Council sponsored the adoption of four families in need of items for the Christmas Holidays. All four families were provided clothing, toys, food items and gift SCRIP.

The 8th grade religion classes collected money for SCRIP and new or gently used stuffed animals, both items go to parents and children at Riley Children’s Hospital.

Sophie Vorndran and Chloe Tobin, kindergarten, were honored at a luncheon at the History Center for winning the Gingerbread House coloring contest.

The Cheerleaders Competition Squad baked and delivered cookies to Queen of Angels shut-ins on December 17.

The student body created Poinsettia Spiritual Bouquets for the parish nursing home and home bound parishioners as part of our Advent project.

January:

Mrs. Dumford, middle school math teacher, was named recipient of the Light of Learning Award for 2006-2007 during Catholic Schools Week.

The Annual Chili Supper, hosted by the faculty, was held for the parish & school on  January 31.

Fifth grader, Matt Bubb, received an Honorable Mention in the Allen County Public Library Annual Poetry contest. Matt’s poem was published in a book distributed by the Library.

Sixth grade Girls Basketball Team took 2nd place in the Holiday Tournament.

Anthony Cox, grade 8, won the annual Spelling Bee Competition, allowing him to advance to the County Spelling Bee.

Queen of Angels won 2nd prize of $150 at the “You Can Lend a Hand Night” at the Memorial Coliseum as the Komets took on Port Huron. The money went towards the new communications system.

Hoosier Communications began wiring of the internet lines throughout the building, pulling data and Comcast cable into every room in the school.

February:

The Science Fair held on February 22 hosted 95 student projects from kindergarten through grade eight.

Eighth grader, Dylan Simpson, was named a James Robinson Merit Scholarship recipient at Bishop Dwenger High School for the 2007-2008 school year.

March:

Queen of Angels cheerleaders took 2nd place in the small schools competition at Bishop Dwenger on March 8.

Local celebrities helped the school launch the first annual “Stories in Slippers” by volunteering to read to students from preschool through grade 4. About 50 students were in attendance.

Students presented art work and our Middle School choir sang at the FAME– Festival of Art & Music– on March 10. FAME Festival Award winners were: Fernando Villafana, 4th grade, Zoo Award; Alana Richardson, 8th grade, Teachers Choice Award; Jenna Fowler and Adam Simpson, both 6th grade and Alex Balestra, 7th grade each received Excellence in Art certificates. Mayor’s Choice Awards went to Anna Christman, 8th grade; Agnes Nicholson, 8th grade; and Mrs. Nicolosi’s 3rd grade for a patchwork quilt.

McTeacher’s Night at Fortmeyers McDonalds on March 12 raised $241.36 towards the communications system.

The following students were named winners at the Annual Regional Science Fair on March 17 at IPFW: Orry Gray, Kindergarten, 2nd place; Noah Isch, grade 2, 4th place, Dylan Simpson, grade 8, 3rd place; David Bell, grade 6, 2nd place; Brian Grabowski, grade 6, 4th place; Adam Simpson, grade 6, 2nd place; and Maria Harlan, grade 8, 4th Place. David Bell also received special awards from the Society of Automotive Engineers, and the U. S. Air Force.

Great Lakes Scholars recognized for outstanding academic and personal achievements included 4th graders Todd Austin, Esther Bell, Matthew Gillett, Peyton Kimes, Christian Kreiger, Collin Levy, Jordan Mazurek, Ashley Morris, Jacob Neidigh, and Erin Ryan.

April:

On April 25, the 8th grade Math Team took 4th place out of 15 teams at the First Annual Middle Grades Math Competition sponsored by Huntington University. The Math Team members included Dylan Simpson, Anthony Cox, Peter Waikel, Paige Yarman, with alternate members, Maria Harlan, and Brianna Flotow. Their teacher is Mrs. Dumford, middle school math teacher.

The new switches to make the internet system functional were installed during Spring Break. Now each classroom has 4 ports available to the internet, and in the computer lab, at least 30. One of the ports in each classroom will have the capability to support a phone for the classroom. The phone can also be used as the intercom system in the school and will have a voice mailbox for each teacher. It is anticipated that the phones will be installed during the summer.

 

May:

Queen of Angels School was notified by the State Department of Instruction that for the second year in a row the school received an “Exemplary School Rating’ based on the Fall 2006 ISTEP scores.

Royal Fest was held the weekend of May 18 & 19 and proved very successful, with preliminary estimates that about $20,000 was raised as profit.

The First Annual May Crowning Court was chosen based on an essay written by the 8th graders based on the question “How is Mary, Queen of Angels, a role model for me?” The court consisted of Anna Christman, Anthony Cox, Nicholas Fowler, Victoria Myers, Amelia Porfilio, Dylan Simpson, and May Crowning Prince J. D. Kimes, and Princess Maria Harlan.

The Queen of Angels School Board completed many goals from the Strategic Plan implemented this year. Some of the most visible include the school banner in the Activities Center, a group of school spirit items for sale including travel mug, license plates, pens, pencils & can coozies. The school website was redesigned now updated with school newsletters, calendars and sports schedules with links to SCRIP, lunch menus and Royal Fest information.  Check it out at queenofangelsschool.com.

June:

Graduation ceremonies were held on June 4th for 30 kindergarten students, and on June 5th for 36 eighth graders.

At the end-of-year Awards Program, 7 students received “Kiwanis Awards” for outstanding accomplishments in some area of the school program. These students were nominated by their teacher.

The Mental Health Association Art Award was presented to 7 fourth grade students.

Over the school year students received over 500 “Peaceful Hearts” for displaying positive character traits to others.  36 students received “Angel Awards” for Academics, 36 for Attitude, and 36 for Christian Outlook.  Approximately 50 students each quarter were  named to the Honor Roll from grades 4 through 8 and approximately 50 received High Honors.
